Yesterday’s composers were undoubtedly already rock. Schubert in the taverns of Vienna, Vivaldi in the Baroque fury, Mozart as an insolent prodigy: they all had in them that fire, that energy, that sense of emotional shock later found in Bowie, Nirvana, Bashung, Radiohead or AC/DC.
